What is NAFTA?
NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement. It creates a special economic and trade relationship for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

What is a Trade NAFTA (TN) visa?
The nonimmigrant NAFTA Professional (TN) visa allows citizens of Canada and Mexico, as NAFTA professionals, to work in the United States. Permanent residents, including Canadian permanent residents, are not able to apply to work as a NAFTA professional.

Can any foreign nurse work on a TN visa?
Unfortunately, no. In order to qualify for a Trade NAFTA visa, you must be a citizen of Canada or Mexico.

How long are TN visas valid for?
TN visas are valid for the duration of the employment agreement.

Will Cross Country TravCorps help me obtain a TN visa?
Absolutely! Cross Country TravCorps will sponsor your TN visa and our Immigration team will also assist you in obtaining your TN visa.

Can the spouse of a Canadian nurse obtain a TN visa and can he/she work?
No, the spouse of a Canadian nurse is not eligible for a TN visa. However, they are eligible for a TD visa. This means that they can reside in the United States legally for the duration of the employment of the principal TN visa. Unfortunately, a TD visa holder may not work.

Can a TN visa apply for a Green Card?
Yes, in most instances a TN visa holder who remains in lawful status may apply for a permanent residence, otherwise known as a Green Card.

As of July 2004, all Canadian travel nurses entering the United States on a Trade NAFTA visa will need a VisaScreen Certificate prior to starting their traveling career.

Cross Country TravCorps is ready to help with the VisaScreen Assistance Program.

Here's how it works:

The VisaScreen Specialist will send you an application package.
You will fill out the application forms and send them back to Cross Country TravCorps with the appropriate fee.

That's it!

Cross Country TravCorps will take care of these steps for you:

Processing the VisaScreen application online.
Sending your license verification forms to your license boards with the appropriate fees.
Ordering your academic transcripts and having them sent directly to CGFNS.
Following up with the boards and nursing school.
Getting updates on your application status and relaying that information to you.
Using FedEx to insure delivery of your documents to the boards and nursing school for easy tracking and follow up.

All of this means that you will never have to make any calls to CGFNS.

Canadian Travel Nurses Important VisaScreen Certificate Information

What is a VisaScreen Certificate?
A VisaScreen Certificate is issued by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). It is required of all foreign trained nurses and physical therapists coming to the United States to work as a healthcare professional. The VisaScreen Certificate is an educational review, licensure review, English language assessment and predictive examination for nurses.

If I am a registered nurse, do I need to complete the NCLEX-RN examination in order to complete my VisaScreen process?
Yes, you will need to have your NCLEX-RN.

Do I need a VisaScreen Certificate if I am a Canadian entering the United States on a "TN" visa to work as a nurse?
Yes, pursuant to Section 343 of the Illegal Immigration Reform Act of 1996, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service will require that you possess a VisaScreen Certificate prior to being admitted as a TN.
